I do know that completely stopping DDOS from a massive scale, which is what most attacks are these days, is impossible. But there are certain preventive measures that could ease that pain from an attack, such as installing a higher bandwidth hardware firewall (but it's going to be quite expensive), collocation hosting, limiting the number of packets per minute from HTTP requests, getting an IDS...
In any case, I do understand that it is very difficult from a security standpoint to stop a website from being attacked, and I as an user appreciate the admins on doing a great job on maintaining the site's usage. It isn't easy and it does require a great deal of time and efforts to keep it up. My comments are merely suggestions and they do not mean to be any sort of criticism whatsoever.
