I had similar experiences in Shanghai and Beijing and that was some 10 years ago.  I have now learned my lesson and that is never never be enticed by people coming to you in the street.   On the other hand, there are good stories in this website telling you what to look for in Shanghai.  Yes it costs you more in Shanghai, but not more than 1,000 local money.   Good luck hunting !!
